Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  How do I get a license to operate a restaurant in Plaistow?

A.  For information and requirements for opening a restaurant or retail food store in the Town of Plaistow, contact the Health Department at 382-2494 ext.21.

Q. How do I get my well water tested?  How often should I test my well water?

A.  Be sure to use a N.H. accredited laboratory for private water testing and interpretation.   You can call the Health Department for a current list of N.H. accredited private and municipal laboratories.  If you are taking the samples yourself, complimentary bottles are available at the Health Department.   The N.H. Department of Environmental Services recommends a standard analysis every 3-5 years.  This analysis covers the most common contaminants such as bacteria, arsenic, iron, manganese.  Additional tests are available for radon and VOC’s.

Q. How can I tell if I have a mold problem in my home?  If I find mold, should I have it tested?

A.  If you can see mold or if there is an earthy or musty smell, you should assume a mold problem exists.  In most cases, testing for mold is not necessary.  If you see mold or smell mold, you have mold.  The most important step in solving a mold problem is to identify and correct the moisture sources that allowed the growth in the first place.  Some common indoor moisture sources include: flooding, roof leaks, plumbing leaks, inadequate venting of kitchen and bath humidity, failure to vent a clothes dryer outside, line drying clothes indoors, condensation, humidifier use, and storing firewood indoors.  The health officer is a resource for information concerning mold, but NH has no specific laws regarding mold.  For more information contact the Plaistow Health Department or N.H. Department of Environmental Services, Environmental & Occupational Health at (603) 271-3911.

Q. Does the Plaistow Health Department give vaccinations or immunizations?

A.  No.  But they can locate a resource for obtaining vaccinations and immunizations.

Q.  Where can I get information on preparing for emergencies?

Preparing makes sense!  Information on personal, family and business preparedness can be found on the emergency preparedness section of this website.
